How to Find WhatsApp Groups and Get Any Group’s ID

How to find WhatsApp groups and get a group ID

WhatsApp groups are where a lot of the internet's most useful conversations happen: local neighbourhood groups, hobby clubs, alumni networks, job leads, trading tips, parent groups. The problem is finding them. Unlike Facebook or Telegram, WhatsApp has no search box for public groups.

This guide shows you six ways to find WhatsApp groups worth joining, how to join from a link or QR code, and how to stay safe once you're in. It also explains what a WhatsApp group ID is and how to get one, in case you want to connect a group to an automation tool.

Can You Search for WhatsApp Groups?

No. WhatsApp doesn't offer a directory or search for groups. Every group is private by design, and you can only join one in two ways: an admin adds you, or you use the group's invite link or QR code.

That means finding groups is really about finding invite links from sources you trust. The six methods below are ordered from safest to riskiest.

The one exception is Channels. They're one-way broadcast feeds rather than groups, and WhatsApp does let you browse them in a directory (method 5).

6 Ways to Find WhatsApp Groups to Join

1. Ask the people and organisations you already know

The best groups are rarely advertised. Ask your college alumni office, your residents' association, your gym, your child's school, local business associations, or colleagues in your industry. Most of them run a WhatsApp group and will share the invite link if you ask.

2. Check official websites and social profiles

Brands, creators, coaches, event organisers and local businesses often post a "Join our WhatsApp group" link on their website, Instagram bio, YouTube description or LinkedIn page. Because the link comes from the organisation itself, you know who runs the group.

Tip: search for the organisation's name plus "WhatsApp group" and only use links from their own pages.

3. Scan a QR code at events and shops

Workshops, conferences, meetups and shops often display a QR code that opens a WhatsApp group invite. Scan it with your phone's camera or from inside WhatsApp. You'll see the group's name and details before you join, so you can check it's the group you expect.

4. Join a WhatsApp Community

A Community bundles several related groups under one umbrella, such as a school with a group for each class, or a housing society with groups for each building. Communities have an announcement group where admins post updates to everyone. Once you join a Community through its invite link, you can see its groups and ask to join the ones that interest you.

5. Follow a Channel instead of joining a group

If you mainly want updates from a brand, a news source or a creator, a Channel may suit you better than a group. Open the Updates tab and look for Find channels to browse the Channels directory.

Channels are more private than groups: other followers can't see your phone number, and admins can't see it unless they already have you saved as a contact. The trade-off is that you can only read and react, not chat.

6. Use group link directories, carefully

Many websites and apps list thousands of WhatsApp group links by topic. They're the fastest way to find groups about anything, and the riskiest. Links go dead, groups get taken over by spammers, and some exist only to run scams or collect phone numbers. If you use them:

  • Prefer groups with a clear owner, purpose and rules.
  • Check the group's details and member count before you join.
  • Leave quickly if it's mostly promotions, "investment opportunities" or requests to move to another app.

How to Join a WhatsApp Group from a Link or QR Code

  1. Tap the invite link (it starts with chat.whatsapp.com/) or scan the group's QR code.
  2. WhatsApp opens and shows a preview: the group's name, photo, description and some members.
  3. Read the description. If it isn't what you expected, close it; nothing happens until you join.
  4. Tap Join group. Some groups ask the admin to approve new members first, so you may see "request sent" instead.

If an invite link says it's been reset or is no longer valid, the admin has replaced it. Ask the group owner for a new one.

How to Stay Safe in Public WhatsApp Groups

Public groups are a favourite target for scammers. In 2025 Meta said it had disabled nearly 8 million WhatsApp accounts linked to scam centres, many of which used groups to pitch fake investments, crypto schemes and "get paid for likes" tasks.

Before and after you join, keep these points in mind:

  • Your number is visible to every member. Anyone in the group can see it and message you directly. Only join groups whose members you're comfortable sharing it with.
  • Control who can add you. Go to Settings → Privacy → Groups and choose My Contacts or My Contacts Except… instead of Everyone. People outside that list have to send you a private invite, which expires after three days.
  • Read the safety overview. When someone who isn't in your contacts adds you to a group, WhatsApp shows a safety overview with the group's creation date, its member count and tips on scams. Leave from that screen if anything looks off.
  • Watch for red flags: promises of guaranteed returns, requests to move to another app, "admins" asking for payments or one-time codes, and links to unfamiliar websites.
  • Never share verification codes. No genuine group admin or business will ever need your WhatsApp or bank one-time code.
  • Leave and report groups that turn out to be spam. Long-press the group, or open its info screen, and choose Report.

How to Get Any WhatsApp Group's ID

A WhatsApp group ID is the group's unique internal address. It looks like [email protected]. You won't need it to chat, but you do need it to connect a group to automation tools, for example to post alerts from Zapier, Make, n8n or your own app.

Two things often confuse people:

  • An invite link isn't the group ID. The code after chat.whatsapp.com/ is an invite code that admins can reset at any time. The ID never changes.
  • You can only get the ID of a group you're in. The ID comes from the group's details on a connected WhatsApp account.

The quickest way to get it is our free WhatsApp Group ID finder, which walks through every method. If you're already using SyncMate, follow the step-by-step group ID guide. For WhatsApp Channels, use the channel ID guide instead; channel IDs end in @newsletter.

Running a WhatsApp Group for Your Business?

If you're on the other side, building a group rather than looking for one, pick the format that fits:

Format

Best for

Who can post

Size

Group

Customer communities, team chats, VIP clients

Everyone, or admins only

Up to 1,024 members

Community

Several related groups under one brand

Admins in the announcement group; members in sub-groups

Several groups plus an announcement group

Channel

One-way updates to a large audience

Admins only

No member limit published

Once your group is running, you can post to it automatically from the tools you already use: new orders to your team group, daily reports to managers, or announcements to a customer community. See how to send messages to a WhatsApp group via API, or set it up with no code using the WhatsApp Zapier integration.

One rule matters above all: automate posts only in groups you run or have permission to post in. Automated posting into other people's groups is spam, and it's one of the fastest ways to get a number banned.

Find the Right Groups, Skip the Wrong Ones

There's no WhatsApp group search, but you don't need one. The best groups come from people and organisations you already know, official pages, QR codes at real events, and Communities. Channels are the private way to follow updates. Directories are a last resort. And once you're in, tighten your group privacy settings and leave anything that smells like a scam.

If you run a group for your business, SyncMate can post updates to it automatically from Shopify, HubSpot, Zapier and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an app to search for WhatsApp groups?

Not from WhatsApp. Third-party directory sites and apps list group links, but anyone can post to them, so treat every group you find there with caution.

Can I join a WhatsApp group without an invite link?

Only if an admin adds you. If your privacy settings stop them, they can send you a private invite instead, which you have three days to accept.

Can other members see my phone number in a WhatsApp group?

Yes. Everyone in a group can see the numbers of other members. If you want updates without sharing your number, follow a Channel instead; followers can't see each other.

How many people can be in a WhatsApp group?

Up to 1,024 members. For larger audiences, use a Community with several groups, or a Channel.

Can I get a group's ID from its invite link?

No. The invite link holds a resettable invite code, not the ID. You need to be a member of the group, then use a tool such as our free WhatsApp Group ID finder.

Why can't I join a WhatsApp group from a link?

The admin may have reset the link, the group may be full, or the group may require admin approval and your request is still waiting. Ask the group owner for a fresh link.
